The area where Greenwood Village homes now stand was originally home to the Native Americans and a few pioneers who settled in the area. In the 1860s, settlers came from the east and midwest in the search for gold, and by the 1900s the Village was full of thriving orchards growing plum, cherry, apricot, apple, and pear trees. The town continued to expand as large portions of land were bought by Rufus Clark and Cyrus G. Richardson whose “Greenwood Ranch” was the inspiration for the name Greenwood Village. By the 1930s and 1940s the community was a blend of “suburbanites”, local farmers, and people who would come south from Denver to their “country homes” every summer. In 1950, the area voted to become an incorporated town, and today Greenwood Village real estate has become a dynamic mix of urban and residential properties. Its superior neighborhood associations and nationally renowned business parks make it one of the best communities for families in the area.
The economic strength of the town is due in part to the many businesses that it has attracted over the years. The Denver Technological Center has part of its operations in Greenwood Village, and many other well-known companies are based there as well, including Molycorp and Red Robin. Top employers in town, like CoBank and Cigna, provide many employment opportunities to people living in Greenwood Village homes, and the town is also close enough for commuters to enjoy living in its hometown community while continuing to work in Denver. A very high percentage of these residents have a college education, so it’s easy to understand that learning options are important for families living in the Village. Two different school districts serve the town, with the Littleton School District serving students on the west side of Holly Street, and the Cherry Creek District serving those to the east. Between the two districts, 10 public schools are available to help the local students reach their full potential, and the educational options for families are rounded out with 2 private schools that serve students from preschool through 8th grade. Many students choose to remain in the local area when it’s time to further their education by attending one of the higher education institutions nearby, like the Metropolitan State University of Denver.
The Greenwood Village community understands the importance of relaxation and leisure time in the quality of life for its residents, and offers a wide variety of recreational activities for all ages. A wealth of parks, playgrounds, open spaces, and outdoor concerts offer everyone the opportunity to spend time in their beautiful environment, and many equestrian and biking trails wind through the village for everyone to use as well. The town offers a wide-variety of events throughout the year, like the Holiday Lighting and Greenwood Village Day, to encourage a sense of community and strengthen the area’s authentic hometown feel as neighbors get together to enjoy the festivities. This community is proud to offer its residents everything they need to grow and thrive in the 21st century.
